Mapping Otherworldly Ecosystems | Ultra Fine-Scale Seafloor Mapping - Week 3

2023

There are no other systems on Earth like hydrothermal vents. Vents are isolated, under extreme pressure, and have radical temperate ranges: beyond-boiling heat to bone-chilling cold. The Mapping Galapagos Vents expedition seeks to map and explore hydrothermal vent fields of the Eastern Galapágos Spreading Center, testing technologies new to Ocean exploration. A better understanding of the region will inform the management and protection of these awe-inspiring and otherworldly ecosystems.

Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants: Exploring the Deep Sea Live from Research Vessel Falkor (too)

2023 (Live Event)

Continue the adventure with the Schmidt Ocean Institute as we accompany their world-class educators on board the RV Falkor (Too). We know more about mars and the moon than the deep sea, but the SOI team is changing that by mapping and understanding our oceans in better detail than ever before! Hosted by Moronke Harris.

Exploring Midwater Migrations over American Samoan Seamounts

2023

When looking for biodiversity in the ocean, we often target areas around seamounts. These underwater mountains (and sometimes active volcanoes) create upwelling, bringing deep-sea nutrients upwards and enhancing productivity at all levels of the ocean food web. Learn how different exploring technologies are tested and how seamounts' impacts on biodiversity are studied inside the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa. Narrated by Moronke Harris.

Unreleased Experience:

Narrator for two science documentary shorts in development.

Blue Planet III Involvement

Hydrothermal Vent Specialist onboard the 2023 NE Pacific Deep-sea Expedition whose Science Team, under the direction of Chief Scientist Dr. Cherisse du Preez and in partnership with ROV ROPOS, collaborated directly with BBC directors to gather beautiful shots of the deep for Blue Planet III.

The expedition set a record for deepest ROV submersible dive in Canadian waters (>3200 m).
